In parallel with the racer project (while I wait on some parts) I have gotten stuck into another little design which I think (or hope!) is going to make a nice accessible project for folks wanting to dip their feet into 3D printable RC toys.

This one is aimed to be a small cartoony tracked vehicle which one will be able to pilot from the driver’s seat. The tracks are printable (I have a flexible version which works nicely in TPU and a segmented version for rigid filaments).

You can see the first blog post here: http://www.cel-robox.com/dieselpunk-crawler-part-1/

This place is better for discussion though, so please dive in with any questions.

Printed in TitanX Grey ABS on the RoboxDual, the whole design prints without supports.

TitanX ABS painted directly with hobby acrylic paints

I have released this project now, and there is a little blog post about it here, which may be of interest.

The torso and all of the joints were modelled in Fusion360 after which I sent the torso and neck piece to Fotis Mint who sculpted on those in ZBrush.

The files are available on myminifactory. The one thing that impresses everyone who sees the video so far is the build plate, one of my favorite features of the RoboxDual too. I’d never have been able to do all those little parts at once in ABS on my other printers without gallons of ABS juice and possibly some mystic rituals.

Hi Ossum. Great design and the trick with the filament as a hinge is neat. I will definately copy that.

I agree the Robox prints ABS really well and it normally releases even more easily than in your vid. I bet you are like me and cant wait for it to cool fully.

    Thanks @hagster

The filament hinges are surprisingly strong too, I think the trick is to make the fit between the two pieces as close as possible, then the little pin of filament can’t bend. I got my finger caught in the tracks and just had to watch it go around the sprocket, I though for sure it would break, but no luck 😉

I think my parts might be sticking a bit too well because the first layer is getting rather squashed. The bed bows upwards a little in middle, which plays havoc with the levelling, but it beats too little adhesion that’s for sure!
