If you need any advice or help with your Root please use this topic. If you see something missing from our help page please notify us below. Root software will run on a lot of devices, we chose Raspberry Pi 3 Model B for the functions and performance it offers for a low price, feel free to discuss other ways of running or using the software here.
We will make Root and Mote hardware available and Software Only packages once Kickstarter backer rewards have shipped. Software only packages will not be eligible for help from our support team but can use the forum, there are just too many variations possible for us to provide this.

My issues:
- AutoMaker doesn’t automatically find the Mote in the Root preferences screen. I have to manually add it through its IP address.
- The step called “Transferring data to printer” in AutoMaker takes forever, and it has failed on 2 out of 4 prints.
- Error message said something along the lines of “Failed to transfer data. The print will not complete” on both the failures.
- First failure on the first print I tried with it: Cute Dragon from Thingiverse.
- The print seemed to complete fine even though AutoMaker said the print would not.
- Second failure (third print): Several parts from the Han Solo Blaster from MyMiniFactory (as many as I could fit on the bed).
- This print simply paused after a few hours and I couldn’t resume it (from the Mote screen).
- When I went to check the PC the error message was on the screen and AutoMaker had disconnected the Mote.
- Frequent small disconnects from AutoMaker. The statusbar on the left will flash disconnected for a second then reconnect. Really annoying when in the print settings screen since it seems to reset settings to default.
- The “&123” mode of the touch keyboard doesn’t fit the Mote screen.
May 6, 2017 at 5:11 pm #39184@zearan My root is working fine. Are you sure you have good WiFi connection or network connection? Are you running the Mote near sources of electromagnetic interference?
I operate two Betas and four Production Robox.
I am the US/Canada Technical Support engineer for the Robox.
See my 3D Hub site at https://www.3dhubs.com/phoenix/hubs/benMay 7, 2017 at 9:09 am #39189@bhudson The mote is standing in the same room as the router so it should have a decent connection. The wifi connection on my laptop is showing full bars so it shouldn’t be a problem either.
May 7, 2017 at 12:22 pm #39192I’ve attached a screenshot of the error message I keep getting.

I decided to use the oldest version I had just to see if it could cope and it seems to be working fine. Don’t get me wrong it takes ages, around 5 minutes, to boot up and connect to the network but once there has no problems connecting to my Robox and sending files.
I used an Edimax N150 Wi-Fi Nano USB Adapter to make it wireless and the OS picked it up fine so there was no need to play around with any settings in terminal.
One thing to consider is I only have one Robox which I use at home and have only so far sent one set of files so I’m not sure how well it would work in a production environment. My guess is it would struggle due to memory limitations.
That said if you have a home setup and an old Pi lying around doing nothing then why not invest in the Root software and get your Robox wireless 🙂

Could you tell me what size screws the root uses to mount itself to the back of the Robox please?
I’ve had a look and they look 5mm long by 2.7/3mm wide but I’m struggling to measure them properly. Are they M3 or M2.5?
Thanks - Jason
May 10, 2017 at 8:51 am #39272To mount Root on the rear of Robox get 2x M3 countersunk screws ~12mm total length (ours are 11.85mm)
Countersunk head is 5.8mm, thread measured roughly is 2.9mm.
There are 4 screws along the rear lower side of Robox. The holes spacing on the Root case fits the 2 middle screws and these do not have anything delicate behind them.

I did support the KS for the case and SD card but realised that my old Pi won’t fit the new case. I’m trying to cobble together an old case to fit to on the back of my Robox now so will order a few screws online. and see what I can come up with
Thanks a lot for all the information. It’s really appreciated 🙂

May 17, 2017 at 8:58 pm #39469When trying to run my Robox with Root connected for the first time I received a “Firmware: Chunk sequence error”. I think I remember firmware loading after I upgraded automaker 3.0. My Robox is not asking to update firmware, so I assume I have the most recent version. What version firmware should I have with Automaker 3.0 and Root? If I don’t have the most up-to-date version, where do I get it if my machine doesn’t automatically download it?
