@dr-woo I have run the same test on my “spare” printer. The measured Z-axis deviations on this one is +- 10 microns (the dial gauge is used for centering parts on a lathe so repeatability versus accuracy was important). The result was the “spare” printer which has only done about 200hrs printing is within +-10 microns the more used used printer,…[Read more]

Attached photo of dial gauge as used. I printed a plastic bracket to support the dial gauge and ensure that no damage was done to the rails. It’s based on the shipping bracket that came with the Robox.
The idea was to measure height variations from the height commanded.
If we assume the extruder outputs a constant volume per unit of…[Read more]

I have done a bit more on this issue. As I couldn’t measure the printed layer thickness accurately on the parts I decided to try a different approach so printed a bracket to mount a dial gauge on the horizontal guide rails down to the bed and used the manual Z-Axis control in the status window to raise the height in 0.1mm steps. The…[Read more]

@bhudson Thanks for the clarification, to my brain it seems like inverted logic but now that I know this was intended I can live with it.

@bhudson Thanks for reply.
I appreciate that there is a lag between actual and displayed.. however I haven’t needed to do manual nozzle opening/closing etc., so I have no comment on the accuracy of these. the print I was doing has reasonable time printing approx 30 seconds before going to next part so it was easy to see the status. This brings…[Read more]

@dr-woo I have printed a cylindrical part 25mm diameter x 10mm high. The photo shows the 5layer repetitive effect. Due to high magnification the focus range was very limited hence blurred near area.
Next is to work out how even the layers are in height. The easiest is to work with the troughs of each layer but is going to be difficult, mainly due…[Read more]

While printing 3 identical smallish parts so that there was a cooling interval between layers I happened to notice that the nozzle graphic on the bottom line shows the nozzle closed when printing and open during transverse between objects, similarly Nozzle2 is always shown as open although it is 100% closed.
It’s a very small detail and does…[Read more]

I have found several artifacts in printing parts.
There is a vertical pattern of approx 2mm in vertical plane and inline with the X & Y axis’s. This may be due to the belt pitch, belt tension or infill pitch. It also seems to be affected by the peripheral speed. I still have to determine exactly the cause of this. T…[Read more]

@squigly Supplied profiles do not allow you to modify them. You have to do a “Save as” to make a file to allow editing then you can save the profile and write it to reel.

@hrudolph thank you for your opinion of independent contractors! Most of us are professional, talented, hardworking & conscientious. We are also need to have a occasional breaks from our profession. The contractor in US that you castigate falls into the professional category.

@bhudson Thanks very much for your response, it is an option, however at this time I do not need flexible filament. When the dual material kits eventually arrive (2 on order) I get extruders that will handle flexible filament, hopefully before I need to use flex filament.

@made2fade I had adhesion issue with ABS, that was before sanding of PEI surface was recommended, I have not gone back to try it. I found XT to be much better for my project with respect to shrinkage and print quality, which is making a patterns for casting, I. @made2fade I agree with @bhudson. My experience with PLA was not the best. Some reels of filament print well others give random slippage, I found that brittle PLA will not print and always gives slippage, flexible PLA prints well but has to be dry. My test is to see if filament breaks when you bend it. Since I changed to XT I have not had a…[Read more]

@dr-woo Thanks for feedback. I used the roof as it was easier to get a photo of the layer deviation. This is at limit of my camera
As it happens I use a 25mm cube to check accuracy of the printer. Have attached a photo of one of them (most I have used normal settings, this one was done on fine settings @ 20% infill, other details as before).

I concur with the 5 layer repetitive pattern on roof. Not so sure about the vertical feature though.. Anyway attached is the picture of print from your *.stl file showing the 5 layer issue. Note that near top of roof there was one of the 5 layer patterns that is much better, not quite perfect but better.
My set up is:

Judging from your pictures the bolt is far too hot, the material is flowing after it is printed.
The nut and bolt will not print well if done individually, the head slows down and more heat is put into part. For M6 nuts and bolts I print at least 4 at a time.
I generated my own M6 files, so don’t know the geometries of your parts, nut a…[Read more]

jhr replied to the topic How to encapsulate a nut in the forum Chatter 5 months ago
@3dmanas an alternative to embedding a nut.
1: Tapping the hole, this works well providing there is sufficient length and perimeter thickness for the thread
2: Use an insert. There are many different types, press fit, heat insert, self tapping (a bit like a solid helicoil) to name a few.
3: Print thread directly. This can be tricky and depends…[Read more]

If the new graphic is to be accepted then the Heated bed, Head & move arrows have to be made clearer with a different colour , old graphic good here, in the case of the move arrows the colours should be stronger and maybe change colour when pointer is over the item. i.e. 200um layer with 30% infill 2 perimeters 3solid top and bottom
25mm cube: estimated time was 21mins took 54mins.
